Yes, yes, yes! Absolutely! Music and sound can be used as a personal mantra. As a trained singer, I love this question! Music is everything in my life.  In fact, when one of my old iPods recently broke, I literally stood in the middle of my living room not knowing what to do with myself.  I forgot I had a computer full of music, a radio, actual cds…I was completely lost! See what a hold music can have on a life?  The hold it has on my life is crazy, so much so that my BFF knows that if for some reason she walks into my house, and I’m not present but my iPod is, I’ve gotten myself into some kind of trouble. I’m being totally serious here, but if you’re laughing, I don’t blame you. It’s pretty ridiculous!
Enough about myself and onto the question! The significance of  music (and sound itself) can be traced back through the histories of multiple cultures, generations, families, countries, continents, healing methodologies etc.  Sound is a concentration of energy.  Each sound produces a specific vibration and frequency. By understanding and working with these frequencies, we can attune to them for multiple purposes.
As a singer/songwriter my emotions and intentions come out in my singing and writing process, but you can complete this exercise with any manner of sound that suits you. If you look closely, you can see the rhythm in all of our lives, from your daily routine to a baby crying, an adult yearning for a connection, to instantly understanding what your pet wants. Frequencies and vibrations are each tuned to a unique pitch, each with their individual purpose. At the risk of sounding cliché, the patterns of life are the musical sounds of the world.

Creating a Personal Mantra
When creating a personal mantra using music or sound, there are some questions that pop to the surface. Here are some:
What do you feel when you listen to different sounds? Â What emotions rush to the surface? Where’s your sound home? Are you cringing? If so, why? Â When do you feel safe? Â What sound connects you to Spirit?
Make a list of all the sounds that come to your mind. Â For example:
- Rain
- Songs
- Tribal cry
- Singing
- Talking
- Voices
- Telephone
- Dogs barking
- Car horn
- Piano
- Birds
- Wind
- Favorite song
- Running water
- Breathing
- Waves
- Chimes
- Skateboard
- Car brake
- Cat meow
- Percussion
- Chanting
Feel free to go crazy with the sounds. Â Everyone is different. Â These are the ones that came quickly to my mind. Â How would the sounds on your list sound layered together? Â What words would you write to go along with them?
Take some time to become acquainted with these sounds. Â Understand and feel them. Â Slowly slowly, you’ll notice how each sound is different – you’ll connect to their frequency. Now feel these differences radiate from your heart to the depths of your roots, your bones, your soul as you connect to each and every sound. Pay close attention to the changes, see where they start. Feel when they end. Â The more you work with a particular sound, the easier you’ll be able to connect to it when you need it.
Once you’ve become acquainted with these sounds and what they mean to you, it’s time to start composing your personal mantra. Don’t set a time limit for yourself. Take as much time as you need. Weave the sounds together, make up lyrics and up them on repeat. It can be anything you want really (as long as it’s the type of sound you connect with the most).
Once you are able to do this, you can call in particular vibrations to work with you for a specific purpose. For example, one of my clients wanted me to compose a healing mantra. Â I wrote one specifically for him, calling on the appropriate frequencies while tying directly into his own vibration. Afterwards, I taught it to him, and he can (and does) use it whenever he feels the need. Each composition I write is completely different and fine-tuned for its purpose. This may take you some time, but I promise you, it is absolutely worth it!
Here’s an example of a song that weaves sounds together effortlessly. It’s called “Xizi She Knows” by the lovely and talented Imogen Heap.  If you don’t know who she is…check her out!  She’s beyond amazing!  Imogen Heap owns all the rights to this song and I do not personally know her.  What (and how) does this song make you feel? As for me, her music moves my soul.
xx,
