I Just Bought A House, Started Renovations & The Paranormal Is In My Home. Help?

EVPYes!!! Please forgive my enthusiasm, but I loooove questions like this.  Since this is a public blog, I won’t get into any particulars of the your situation. I’ve also created an EVP Questions Cheatsheet for you. It’s designed to help you make a good impression on spirits and show you how to create a productive EVP session (including the exact questions I use).

Often times, it is also quite possible for activity in your house to occur due to a non-paranormal cause. Check to see if you have any animal visitors in your house.  Maybe the wiring is faulty or objects in your house have abnormally (not paranormal) high EMF readings? Don’t worry, there will more about that term shortly.  This is of course only a minimal list of non-paranormal causes.  Feel free to check away, and attempt to debunk anything things

That said, when someone moves into a house and renovates it, this can awaken something in the house which was dormant before.  If it wasn’t dormant before the renovation, then it’s still very likely to exacerbate any paranormal activity in the house.  This is understandable.  The house is changing – what would you do if you saw someone renovating your house?

I’m going to explain some of the basic tools in a paranormal investigator’s tool kit. But before I do, let me emphasize you should be respectful to the spirits you encounter.  Otherwise, you risk annoying them, causing more activity, and in some cases, harm to the living.  Most spirits do not mean any harm.

Before you start any paranormal investigation, make sure you are spiritually protected.  There are many different ways to do this. You can wear your religious symbol if you want. Your safety is paramount! Remember, there is a possibility you could encounter an entity you aren’t equipped to handle. Think long and hard about whether you want to continue with conducting an investigation.  If you feel you’re in over your head, or just need some help, please ask a specialist. Doing so will save you a ton of headaches in the long run at the very least.

Envision yourself surrounded by light, and state that you’re surrounded by the highest good, and are always protected.  It is also a good idea to recite a prayer of some sort if you’re feeling nervous, or have a bad gut feeling going into the investigation (of course you can recite a prayer anytime).  While it is important for you to feel connected to this prayer and believe in its power, it does not have to belong to your religion. Prayers have been used for hundreds of years, and pack quite a punch so to speak.  Use that momentum when setting your intentions of protection with the prayer.  Here is one that is well-known and is very strong.

Craft Spiritual ProtectionSt. Michael the Archangel Prayer

“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.  Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host – by the Divine Power of God – cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Here’s the toolkit:

  1. Journal of Occurrences: Okay, this might not be in every paranormal group’s toolkit, but it is extremely helpful.  Also, if you plan on inviting a paranormal group to investigate your house, they’ll find your journal very helpful.  Record any activity your consider ‘strange’ in this journal.  Be as detailed as possible (what the strange activity is, time, date, place etc.).  It might turn out to be just the water heater turning on, but by keeping this journal, it’ll help you figure out what is (and what isn’t) paranormal.  I also recommend for you to research the history of your house and land.  You can ask neighbors, your local historical society, local library or ask previous owners – just please don’t be pushy about getting information.  Sometimes when people are really enthusiastic about something, they can seem overwhelming.  Feel free to include this information in the journal.  It’s very helpful to have everything in one place. Once you’ve done your research, narrow down what you think might be haunted (house, object, land).
  2. EMF aka Electromagnetic Field:  In its’ natural form, EMF is generated by living things and inanimate objects such as certain minerals, metals, lights, radios and wires.  You will need an EMF machine for this. Before you try this experiment, make sure you measure any object in the room that gives off EMF.  By doing so, you now have a baseline reading. In paranormal investigations, there is a theory which states that spirits are mainly composed of energy, which in turn could be electrically based.  By trying to detect EMF, it could be possible to ‘see’ a spirit that would have remained unseen.  It’s thought that spirits need energy to manifest.  Spirits can draw on EMF to help with this. So, when a spirit manifests it can give off an electromagnetic field.  The stronger the EMF is (compared to the baseline), the more likely it is to be paranormal.  However, EMF in general can make people feel ‘off’, so if you’re in a room with a very high baseline of EMF, that could be the explanation for any experiences in that room.  If this is indeed the case, try to remove some of the objects, and see how the people feel in the room over time, now that the objects are gone.  You can buy an EMF reader from Amazon.com.
  3. EVP aka Electronic Voice Phenomena:  This is the well-known technique of recording and then hearing unexplainable voices during playback.  You can use either a digital recorder or a tape recorder.  The latter is harder to play with in order to fake an EVP. Make sure you conduct this in a quiet room, and know exactly where everyone in the house is at that particular time, pets included of course. There are several ways you can conduct an EVP session.  Before you start, I recommend you explain to the spirits what you’re doing, what the recorder is (what it does) and that it’s perfectly okay and safe to speak through.
  4. Photography/Video Documentation:  By using a digital, polaroid, 35mm etc. or video camera it is possible to capture images of spirits.  They can appear in many different forms.  Some of them include a vapor, a haze, a vortex (usually a line of energy) and orbs.  If you do capture any forms of camera, double check to see whether there is a non-paranormal cause.  Dust? Bug? Fog? Thumb on lens?  Weather? Make sure to be thorough. Also check to see how experienced the camera man is. Human error can and does occur.
When conducting a paranormal investigation, persistence is the key.  The paranormal shows on tv are filmed for hours, and are then cut down to 1 hour.  Don’t be discouraged if at first you find this hard.  This is another time in which practice does help.  You learn as you go along which questions to ask, what to look for and what to discard. I hope this helps.  If you have anymore questions about this or feel you’re in over your head, I urge you to contact me or your local paranormal group. Be careful!

xx,
